Home Office 2 Family Office

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to create an upgraded family office.  Once my first grader started to get homework, she had a hard time finding a place to do it.  Her younger brother and sister would always distract her, so it was hard to find a quite spot that didn’t make her feel isolated.  She wanted me close by while she did her homework, but her younger siblings also wanted me close by while they were playing.  The best spot I could find was the office in the front of the house.   This space is perfect because it has French doors with windows which she could close for privacy.  The ability to look outside the room helped her to feel like she was still part of the “action.” That’s when I decided our family needed an office for the entire family.

Our office set-up at that time wasn’t working for the adults and wasn’t child friendly.  The office was filled with random pieces of furniture from our move three years ago that really hadn’t found a place in this house.  The desk was our old breakfast table and the chairs were from our old formal living room.  I loved the chairs, but they really just took up space in the office and they were never used except for the kids to hid behind when they were playing tag in the house.  The office was the first room you saw when you walked into our house and it was clear we never put any time into making it beautiful.  It was time for an update.

The key things I wanted, was an office where:

-My children can individually do homework or work on projects close to me, but away from their siblings.

-If we wanted to, all of my children and I could work together

-I can easily access, organize and store their educational games and supplies.

-The children could easily access their things.

-I can store and organize family bills, records and office supplies.

-We felt calm both looking at and being in the office because it was a beautiful minimal design space

We had other small projects to get done in our house, so we contacted a friend/designer (Great Living Company) to pick out some new pieces and below are the results.  I hope it gives you some ideas for your home office.

It's My Birthday!

10 Things I love about being born in October:

1.     The weather! Growing up in the north, it was the time of year you could finally start wearing your new school clothes that your parents bought almost two months ago.  In the south, you can actually start enjoying patio dining at restaurants.

2.      The trees start changing colors.

3.     Comfort food is cool which is perfect because it’s no longer bathing suit season!

4.     I love fall fashion and make-up colors.

5.     Halloween is one of my favorite celebrations. I love giving out candy and seeing kids dressed up in their costumes.

6.     I feel like the western world slows down in October.  Summer has ended and school has started. October is the calm month before the busy Holiday season.

7.     Oktoberfest. Yes, I love beer!

8.     Orange is one of my favorite colors and it’s everywhere.

9.     I love fall flowers and they are blooming all around me.

10. As a “stay-at-home-mom”, I can do my favorite thing on my birthday because … since the kids are at school … I can binge watch TV guilt free!

Happy New Year!

It’s a New Year and I’m taking this time to  organize some goals for me to focus on for 2019. This past fall, all the kids started school or daycare. For the first time since I became a mom, I have a few hours to myself each day to work on projects.

Some of the projects are new, like decorating my entryway, and some I’ve been putting off for YEARS, like making a baby book for my (now) 6 year old.

The following is my list of goals that I would like to work on during 2019. My list is more of brain dump. I don’t expect to conquer everything on my list this year, but just seeing it on paper makes me feel good. may or may not blog about all of the following projects as I attempt to conquer them.  I say this because I’m not sure what direction this blog is going. For now, as I stated in my last entry, I will be gentle with the blog and let it grow organically into what ever it is meant to be.

Blogging about Nothing?

Ok so as you may have noticed… meal planning isn’t working for me…hahaha!  Urrrrr I so want to blog but I have no idea what to blog about. I don’t want to blog about my kids because they aren’t old enough to let me know if they want their lives on display.  So there goes the mom blogging idea but all I really do is mom stuff.  Once in a while, I will think of something new to blog about and then talk myself out of blogging about it.  I’m just going to lower my standards and blog about nothing until I start blogging about something.  Lets see if the, "Work Begets Work" saying works for blogging.
